5 Tips to Prevent and Deal With Mold in Your Home

Mold is an incredibly common pest – and an incredibly annoying one at that.

Not only does it only take a slight increase in humidity for mold to appear, but mold spreads staggeringly fast, and it’s fairly difficult to get rid of it fully. Mold may hide behind objects, in hidden corners, behind furniture or wallpapers, or elsewhere.

It could “invade” your house plants, your wardrobe, and even your bedding. What’s worse, mold is not only icky and smelly, but it can also trigger allergic reactions in many.

This is why it’s a no-brainer that most people want to take the necessary steps to eradicate mold from their homes or prevent its appearance before it happens.

And, here are five pro tips that’ll help you maintain a mold-free household.

deal with mold in your home

1. Ventilate Your House Regularly

It’s true that opening all windows in your home is not a regular habit to most, especially during the colder seasons.

However, it’s a necessary evil and makes one of the most effective ways to combat mold. Mold thrives in humid spaces, so the regular circulation of fresh and dry air will significantly prevent it from appearing – or stop it in its tracks if it’s already there.

2. Check for Potential Leaks

Another thing that you’d have to do when dealing with mold is to thoroughly check for leaks around the house. A broken pipe in the kitchen, a tiny hole in your window frame, or a deep crack in your wall, is as good as sending a formal invitation to the mold, letting it know that it’s welcome in your home.

To prevent it, make sure to address any leaks as soon as possible.

3. Quickly Dry-Soak Surfaces and Objects

Sometimes, household mold doesn’t come from the outside but occurs from within. If you happen to spill a drink on a thick carpet, or you soak your favorite jumper, don’t just let the moist sit, since you’ll be essentially growing your own mold garden without realizing it.

Instead, immediately dry all wet surfaces inside your home, and make sure they never stay moist for longer periods of time.

4. Regularly Check Your Basement, Attic, and Gutter

The final step you can take to prevent mold from appearing is to regularly check the areas of your house which might be naturally prone to becoming moldy.

Your basement, attic, and gutter, for example, have a higher probability of staying cold and wet throughout the year, gathering dust, and collecting rain through cracks or holes.

If you notice anything suspicious or wetter than usual, dry them as soon as possible.

5. Thoroughly Clean Moldy Areas

On some occasions, you may actually have to deal with mold that’s already there. There’s nothing to dread about it, though. Simply use water and soap and thoroughly clean the targeted area.

You can also try mixing bleach with water – it truly does wonders when it comes to mold. Whatever you end up doing,  make sure that you clean every last bit of the fungal pest.

Mold has nothing on your cleaning skills!
